Textbooks and Late Work
If you or your student checked out a hard copy of the English Literature textbook, please have the student return it to the library either before school, at lunch, or after school. If the student received the electronic login for the textbook, he or she does not need to do anything.

All late work, missing assignments, and quiz make-ups must be completed and turned in on Thursday, June 2 in order to be graded and inputted into ABI for grades.

Final Projects for 7th and 8th graders are due on Tuesday, June 7.

Wednesday Wars
We are embarking on the final unit of the school year. 8th graders will be reading the novel Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt. There is a strong Shakespeare emphasis in the novel that will help prepare the 8th graders for high school level readings.

The novel takes place in the 1960's and focuses on issues such as the roles of men and women in society, the civil rights movement, religion, music, sports, fashion, and the Vietnam War. In order for the students to fully understand the significance of these topics in relation to the time period, characters in the novel, and the plot, they are conducting research projects on one of the topics in order to share their findings with their classmates.

Research Project Due Tuesday, May 3.
Final Project Due Tuesday, June 7.

The school owns enough copies for every student to have their own in class; however, there are not enough copies for students to take home. If a student would like to purchase their own copy, they may do so.

Argumentative Essay
Students took a computerized pre-assessment on their knowledge of argumentative essays.

During the unit, students will be writing two argumentative essays.

Essay 1: To what extent do celebrities have a positive or negative impact on our lives? Due Thursday, March 17

Essay 2: Essay Assessment (topic will be revealed the day of the assessment).

The students read an article on celebrities impacts on people as well as an excerpt from a Sophomores' essay on the same topic. They will incorporate evidence from their observations, experiences, or readings in addition to the essay by Deborah King. The majority of the essay will be written, edited, and revised in class. Any work not completed in class will automatically become homework.

Freak the Mighty
If you are absent, check the calendar to see if you missed any chapters today. If you did, read the summaries of the chapters HERE.

If you miss a day of reading, go through the Freak the Mighty PowerPoint and find the chapter number and its correlating quick write. You need to have all 12 quick writes completed at the end by the novel to receive all of your quick write points. Missing quick writes will result in a lower grade. Click HERE for the PowerPoint.

Complete the vocabulary and looking up any quotes for the symbols when you return. You'll have enough time in class to complete those activities. It is the student's responsibility to remember to complete these activities, and it must be done before we finish reading the novel.
